What is Slow Shopping?
Slow Shopping is about more than simply reducing noise. It’s a thoughtful, inclusive approach that recognises that some people need more time, space and understanding when using everyday places. The focus is on dignity, patience and creating conditions where people feel comfortable and confident.
Slow Shopping can be particularly supportive for:
- People with autism
- Those who experience sensory sensitivities
- Shoppers with anxiety or communication challenges
- Older adults and people living with dementia
- Anyone who benefits from a calmer, more relaxed environment
What to Expect During Slow Shopping Sessions
During these sessions, the centre will make adjustments where possible to support a calmer experience, which may include:
- Reduced background noise and music
- Fewer loud announcements
- Seating available throughout the centre
- Staff awareness and readiness to offer support
These adjustments are designed to reduce sensory overload and help people feel more at ease while shopping.
