Getting Here

We’re proud to be right in the heart of Newcastle. We’re close to multiple public transport links and there’s plenty of parking available in two adjacent car parks: Eldon Square multi-storey and Eldon Garden.

Monument Metro Station is just a two-minute walk away from our Grey’s Quarter Entrance and Haymarket Metro Station is a five-minute walk from our Northumberland Street entrance. If you prefer taking the bus, the Eldon Square bus station is conveniently adjoined to the centre.

Whether you’re visiting by bus, car, train, metro, bike or on foot – getting here couldn’t be easier.

Travelling by car

Eldon Garden Car Park is accessible via Percy Street and has 445 spaces, including disabled spots. Find it here.

Eldon Square Multi-Storey is also accessible via Percy Street and has 497 spaces, including disabled spots. Find it here.

Both car parks are open 7am-10pm Monday to Saturday, then 8am-6pm on Sundays. Search NE1 7RZ.

Travelling via the Tyne Bridge

The Tyne Bridge is currently undergoing restoration work and is reduced to two lanes – one northbound and one southbound. As the bridge capacity is reduced, please plan ahead and allow more time for your journey.

For more information on how to plan your journey, visit the Tyne Bridge website here.

Please note, Newcastle and Gateshead Clean Air Zone signs and cameras are now in operation throughout the city centre.

Charges only apply to buses, coaches, taxis, private hire vehicles, heavy goods vehicles and light goods vehicles that do not meet national CAZ emissions requirements. For more information visit the Newcastle City Council website.

Travelling by bus

Buses from Tyne & Wear, County Durham and Northumberland all come to Eldon Square. It’s a North East thing.

Head for the Eldon Square and Haymarket bus stations. Or use the on-street stops at Blackett Street, Market Street and Pilgrim Street.

Travelling by Metro

Monument is the closest Metro Station to Eldon Square, just a two-minute walk from our Grey’s Quarter entrance. Or you can use the Haymarket Metro Station, which is only five minutes away from our Northumberland Street entrance or Central Station, which is a 10 minute walk from our Clayton Street entrance.

There’s direct access to the shopping centre from Monument Metro via a lift or stairwell just inside the Grey’s Quarter entrance.

All you need to do is grab a Metro Zone A/Network One Zone 1 ticket and hop on.

Travelling by train

Coming from further afield? Newcastle Central Station is a 10-minute walk through the centre along Grainger Street. Rail services into the city are frequent.

Travelling by bike

Why not take things at your own pace? Explore Newcastle’s scenic views through any number of the city’s cycle routes, and pop into Eldon Square while you’re here.

Cycle parking can be found on Northumberland Street, Blackett Street and Percy Street.

Plan your journey with Go Smarter’s Newcastle Cycle Map.

Travelling by taxi

Nearest taxi ranks:

  • Prudhoe Place (between Haymarket and Eldon Square bus stations)
  • Hood Street (off Grey Street, next to Lloyds Bank)
  • Taxis may also pick up on Blackett Street, by Grey’s Monument

Local taxi companies can be contacted below:

Accessibility

Eldon Square is committed to providing an accessible shopping experience for all our customers. From the moment you arrive, you’ll find accessible parking spaces close to key entrances, step-free access and lifts to help you navigate around with ease.

We recognise that accessibility goes beyond physical access, too. That’s why we offer Quiet Hours for a more relaxed shopping environment, an autism-friendly guide, sensory bags, and more.

Whatever your needs, our friendly team is here to help – just head to Guest Services on arrival or contact us ahead of your visit.

There are 32 disabled spaces available in the Eldon Square Multi-Storey, and 23 available in Eldon Garden. Please note that there is currently no disabled access via the Eldon Garden car park.

Further spaces can also be found throughout Newcastle city centre.
Please note, access to the Eldon Square multi-storey carpark is closed within the shopping centre in accordance to the centre’s opening times: Monday – Wednesday, Friday and Saturday 9am – 7pm, Thursday 9am – 8pm and Sunday 11am – 5pm.

Of the 21 entrances to Eldon Square, 17 are wheelchair accessible. These include:

  • Northumberland Street
  • Grey’s Monument

At Eldon Square, we’re committed to providing an accessible shopping experience for all our visitors. We therefore recognise and support the Sunflower Lanyard scheme, which is a great way to identify hidden disabilities. Those who wear one in our centre will be treated with patience and care. You can find out more about the initiative or purchase your own lanyard here.

In support of North East Autism Society, we host regular Quiet Hours, which have been extended from 1st May 2025:

Monday: 9am – 10am
Wednesday: 9am – 10am
Saturday: 9am- 10am
Sunday: 11am – 12 noon

From autism to dementia, this hour is for anyone who prefers a quieter setting when shopping. Where possible, we’ll turn down the music, dim the lights, and our staff will be on hand with guides to the centre.

We’re always open to hearing about what would make your shopping experience more accessible. So, why not drop us an email with your suggestions to info@eldonsquare.co.uk

Our Autism Friendly Guide in partnership with the North East Autism Society.

This guide will support you with the early stage of planning a visit, to enjoying your experience on the day. This booklet will also let you know what to do in an emergency and how our teams can support you.

Throughout your visit there will be friendly, trained staff on hand should you require our help.

To download your booklet, please click here.

For more information on the North East Autism Society, please visit their website www.ne-as.org.uk, email info@ne-as.org.uk or call 0191 410 9974.

Eldon Square welcomes assistance dogs in the centre. Other pets are unfortunately not allowed. We need to confidently tell the difference, so please ensure your dog wears a high-vis jacket or harness.

For the same reason, we suggest you add a sunflower-design sleeve to your dog’s harness or lead. The sleeve should simply slide over the restraints, but really helps us to identify your buddy as an assistance dog.

Assistance dogs must follow the following terms and conditions when inside the centre:

  • Will not wander freely around the premises
  • Will sit or lie quietly on the floor next to their owner
  • Are unlikely to foul in a public place
  • Access to assistance dogs is on a one dog per handler basis

Manual wheelchairs are available for hire from within the centre. Please speak with a member of our customer service team, who will be happy to arrange one for you.

In partnership with the North East Autism Society, our sensory bag was designed by parents to provide a relaxed shopping experience.

The bag can be hired from our Customer Service desk located outside Fenwick and Boots for a £20 refundable deposit, which you will receive back upon returning the bag. At present we can only take cash deposits.

What’s included:

  • Fidget toys: These can help manage an increase in anxiety.
  • Ear defenders: Autistic visitors can become overwhelmed by sounds and noises, leading to sensory overload, which can lead to anxiety and stress. Ear defenders help to dull some of this noise and can offer reassurance to autistic people when in a shopping centre environment.
  • Egg timers: Autistic visitors may find the transition difficult; an egg timer can help the visitor to countdown before moving on to the next thing. In a shopping centre, these egg timers could be used to visually represent the passing of time. For example, how long the person may be in a specific shop or how long they have left until lunchtime.

How much does it cost to hire a sensory bag?
You may hire the sensory bags from the Customer Service desk outside of Fenwick and Boots. A £20 refundable cash deposit is taken, which you will receive upon returning the bag.

How long can I hire the sensory bag for?
The sensory bag must be handed back to the customer service desk of hire within 4 hours. If you need to extend the hire time, please speak to the Customer Service team who will be happy to assist.

Can I purchase the backpack?
Unfortunately, the backpack is not be for sale. However, you can contact the North East Autism Society to find out where to purchase the items.

Are the products cleaned after each use?
All of the products within the backpacks are thoroughly cleaned with disinfectant wipes after each use. We also provide disposal covers for the ear defenders. Please speak with a member of our Customer Service team if you are concerned over any allergies.

Can I phone and reserve a sensory bag to hire later in the day?
As the centre currently only has a small supply of sensory backpacks, we are unable to offer this service at present. However, we will be reviewing this over the next couple of months.

We have multiple accessible toilets to make your experience at the centre as easy as possible. Please note that a RADAR key is needed to access our disabled toilets.

  • St Andrew’s Way adjacent to the main toilets (near Apple), plus an assisted changing room located off St Andrew’s Way, near New Look
  • Grey’s Quarter main toilets, plus one on the lower and one on the upper Grey’s Quarter malls
  • St George’s Way toilets (near Argos)
  • Eldon Square Bus Station

Our Changing Places facility is located off St Andrew’s Way Mall near New Look. This facility is free of charge and is available for customers who need to use it. It is open during centre hours and has a controlled entrance. Customers can request access cards from the Customer Service desk located next to Fenwick..
Our facility includes a height-adjustable changing bench with a hoist, and ceiling track and a peninsular toilet.

Please note that we do not provide slings and advise you to check with your sling manufacturer to ensure they are compatible. Due to the specialist needs of individuals, Eldon Square staff are unable to provide assistance in the use of this facility.

Please be assured that our team will clean the facility between every use.
